This richly and colourfully-garbed cavalryman would, on his officer’s command, sound the different trumpet calls that would let the regiment of horse know what was required of them during the “din of battle” or the many manoeuvers on parade or even while on the move. Most trumpeters would also ride a white steed, the better to be seen by both officer and men.
